Music & Dance Groups

Dance Therapy

Dance Therapy NZ is thrilled to announce the launch of STARS, its Pakuranga-based dance movement therapy group for children with Autism, ADD and other special needs. DTNZ will be offering two after school dance movement therapy groups based at Te Tuhi.

The groups are led by a team of dance movement therapists who ensure that the sessions target the progress of each individual child while providing a fun, creative and expressive space. Not just a regular dance class, these groups give children the opportunity to develop essential social, sensory and movement skills, which can have a profound impact on their lives outside of the dance therapy group.  Some of the amazing benefits of attending a STARS group include increased confidence, ability to make eye contact, try new things, manage emotions and interact with siblings and other children. Recently a parent from the STARS programme commented, 'Dance Therapy provides [my son] with a sense of belonging. He enjoys the routine, the gentleness of the staff and familiarity he has gained with sessions and he has made friends.'

Although there is an overwhelming need in the community for creative therapeutic children's programmes, STARS is the only programme of its kind in Pakuranga.

Manukau Symphony Orchestra

Manukau Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is a community orchestra based in South Auckland. The orchestra presents four varied concerts annually to patrons from across Auckland at the Vodafone Events Centre. Established in 1993 with active support from the Manukau City Council and the Manukau community, the MSO is 26 years of age this year. Professor Uwe Grodd has been the orchestra's Music Director since its foundation. Two orchestras - the Howick Orchestra and the Howick-Pakuranga Youth Orchestra - were forerunners to the Manukau Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra, in addition to performances at the Vodafone Events Centre, supports NZ soloists, brings international soloists to the community of South Auckland, offers scholarships to talented youth players and provides opportunity for professional players to mentor youth and community musicians. It also frequently commissions new works from NZ composers, proudly premiering them right in the heart of Manukau.

Weight-In Ltd (Kiwi Kiss)

Carolyn Gibson founded Kiwi KISS classes in July 1984 with the belief that if we could enjoy our meals and use everyday ingredients (no diet foods or artificial sweeteners) then we would be more likely to continue cooking those meals once we had achieved our goal. Too often we follow a strict regime for a short period of time, then return to our old habits along with the return of our weight.

The class format includes a full demonstration of our weekly recipe, a copy of which you take home, and the opportunity to sample, if you wish. This allows you to assess if that particular recipe would fit into your family meals - without wasting your ingredients and time at home.
